Never Give Up
Attributed to Many Authors
This
principle has almost universal recommendation. Former British Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill
was attributed to say “never, never, never give up” and he suited the word to
the action. You will however find this style of quote attributed to hundreds of
people in different forms. So why is this universal truth recommended to us?
For the simple reason that those who never give up do achieve remarkable
success at the time that they least expect it.
Time and again people have been
encouraged by others to give up on a particular course that they were committed
to. Yet the person has pressed on regardless. The result is that
remarkable success has come along, at the most unexpected times and in the most
unexpected way. Just by pressing on that little bit further a person suddenly
realizes the success that they were trying to achieve and that they thought
that they would be achieved much earlier.
Think of inspirational people like
Nelson Mandela the African leader and you have a classic example of someone who
has stuck out his fight only to achieve recognition and real results down the
track. Think of Thomas Edison and his search for a filament to use in the light
globe and the many failed experiments that preceded it. You quickly gather from
these examples the importance of persistence. As with the principle of honesty
people admire strength. A person who does not give up in the face of adversity
wins admiration. However there is also a universal truth at work here.
Life
rewards the persistent. Some people are like a firework. They make a lot of
noise and they aim high but they quickly return to ground. They say that they
gave it their best efforts but in reality they tried only once or twice. They didn't struggle for success. They wanted easy results!
A person who
succeeds will often have to try many times before they reach success. Like the
mountain climber who chooses the face of the mountain and tries out a given
route. They may only climb up so far and realize that they cannot reach the
summit. So what do they do? They don’t walk away defeated but they choose a
different face of the mountain. They start again and this time they reach the
summit. There is usually a way to reach success. It is a matter of being
persistent. And life has a way of rewarding the persistent while at the same
time doing little for those who are unwilling to put in the effort to reach a worthwhile goal.
Sometimes
people will tell you that the so-called reasonable thing to do is to give up.
But who really knows the situation? Who has put in the work so far? Who is
really in the best place to face that decision and examine whether it has
merit? Isn’t it the person doing the job? So shouldn’t you be the one to
consider this decision? Do you value your opinion and worth enough to persist?
In some
cases you may have to stop what you are doing and set it aside until a better
time allows you to proceed. But if you really believe in doing something then
don’t lose sight of your vision. You had real reasons to start the process.
Remember these and if possible press onwards. Life may have a reward waiting
you around the next corner.
Do the impossible. Because you can.
